If you’re here, you must have an interest in painting animals that bark, meow and quack! In this course I’ll show you methods on how to capture these very special beings in pastel. Animals are an important and often, central part of our lives. Our pets love us unconditionally and we love them without question. Think about the world without them…

I got my start as an artist by being attracted to drawing animals. My favorite subjects were wild cats. Later in my career as an illustrator, I had the opportunity to work on a series of videos for Clifford the Big Red Dog and luckily was tasked with plenty of other projects that included animals.

I’m excited to introduce this workshop …Kitty and friends. Mabel and Kitty will be taking center stage along with a Mandarin duck, a sweet little bunny and a lovely hummingbird. This is a chance to have a fun, paint our best friends or our best friends, best friends…maybe even end up with a lovely gift to give someone special. Mostly, I want to step outside of our norm and play. Let's paint some furry fluffy critters, some sparking eyes and some warm puppy bellies!!

We'll be busting out our pastels to express our love for our friends and their unique beauty. As usual the fundamentals of painting and the elements of art, line, shape, value, color, texture and will be a part of our play and study of these lovely and familiar critters.

Five video demonstrations, study and suggestions for independent assignments make this a full and rich five-week study of our four legged and winged friends. You'll get to see the best friends of your fellow students and share in the love!  I hope you’ll join in the pastel fun!

MATERIALS YOU WILL NEED

Pastels

I primarily use Terry Ludwig, Nu-Pastels, Mount Vision, Unison and Giraults but I also like many of the other brands such as Blue Earth and Schmincke. Please do not bring or buy Alphacolor or Prang pastels. No Oil Pastels. I recommend the Sennelier Paris half stick set of 120 for those who would like to purchase a good starter set. A great addition to that set or for anyone that doesn’t have any Terry Ludwig pastels, would be Terry Ludwig’s set of Intense Darks II.

Please prepare your pastels for working by taking off the wrappers, (before the workshop). Arrange them by color family and value. This will save you lots of time during the workshop. The largest set of pastels that you have (see recommendations in “Choosing Pastels” video).

Demo 1 - Mabel

How cute is Mabel? I decided to paint the straight-on gaze in order to highlight her different colored eyes.

Demo 2 - Kitty

This is a great opportunity to practice painting fur in pastel.  Kitty has thick fur with variegated and subtle color shifts.

Demo 3 - Hummingbird

I love encountering these fascinating birds in my garden, especially their sound when they come close by.

Demo 4 - Duck

The Mandarin Duck is considered the most colorful duck in the world, so we will have to dig deep into our palette to capture him.

Demo 5 - Bunny

I’m going to create a full value dry under-painting in black conte’ and apply the color with pastel over the top.

Study 2 - How Do I Paint Fur?

The first thing to realize is that there are a lot of different kinds of fur that will require different techniques and different strokes. Just in one painting, there might be short smooth fur, long wispy fur, thick clumpy fur, etc.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Step 1. Review the materials list & read through the assignments so you get a general idea of what you'll be accomplishing. Gather your materials, read the instructions for the first assignment. Watch the introduction video and first demo video.

Step 2. Complete the demos at your own pace. The workshop is designed to be completed within 5 weeks, so we'll send you email reminders to get your assignments done. Use these lessons to create winning compositions featuring our animal friends - transform the ordinary into the extraordinary.

Step 3. Upload your work after you've completed each demo. Throughout the workshop, be sure to review other students' work and read the comments and reviews of your own work. Enjoy your progress and new-found confidence in painting with pastels!
