How To Paint Vibrant Landscapes With Award Winning Pastelist, Marla Baggetta

How To Start Your Lessons

Step 1. I designed the lessons to help you start with the basics and paint more difficult pieces toward the end. Each lesson contains several videos and demos to watch and then paint along.

Step 2. Stop the video whenever you need to – it’s one of the greatest things about learning this way. Plus you don’t need to take notes! Take your time, but not really. I want you to speed up a bit so you can start to develop the “whole” piece all at once. Do it differently. If it feels uncomfortable, you’re likely on the right track.

Step 3. Don’t feel funny about copying my pieces! It’s a time – honored way to learn and I know you’ll develop your own “style” in due course. I give you lots of ways to take off on your own and expand on the demos/lessons. If you post a lesson piece on social media be sure to mention that it’s the result of a lesson from me. I would really appreciate it and avoids any confusion amongst your peers.

Meet Marla

Meet The Inspiring Pastelist Who Created PastelPaintingLessons.com

Marla is an incredibly talented fine artist who works with galleries throughout the US. Every year she travels the globe teaching workshops, speaking at art events to inspire other painters. Last year she launched a new website to the public with the purpose of helping thousands of struggling artists to succeed.

“My Working process is a simple one; I start on location, sketching, photographing and painting. Some of these field studies make their way to the studio.

In the studio I use all of that visual information and combine it with the sense or feeling I had for a location and create what is inevitably an abstraction of sorts in that it is not merely a copy of a photo but an interpretation of place. I hope that you enjoy the work!”

-Marla Baggetta

Bonus #1: "Secret to Vibrant Colors" - Optical mixing is the effect when two or more colors are perceived simultaneously and they are combined into a new color. You can use this idea effectively in your work which adds vibrancy and luminosity. The Optical Mixing video will show you how overly blending your pastels minimizes this effect and tends to deaden the work. Watch and see how keeping your fingers off of your painting will enhance the colors and end up with something exciting, giving the viewer something more to look at within the shapes.
Bonus #2: "How To Create Beautiful Paintings From Reference Photos" - Working from life is unquestionably the optimal way to work, but it’s not always possible. Weather, mobility, time constraints, among other things makes painting from life impractical some of the time. Weather is often an issue for me. No matter how hard-core you are, sometimes conditions will not allow you to do your best work outdoors. You may be on a painting trip when there isn’t enough time to paint all the many scenes that inspire you. If we don’t use photo reference in these cases, we could miss out on an opportunity to paint something of great merit!
Bonus #3: "200 Landscape Photos to Paint" - I always suggest that you take your own photographs, but I know it’s not always possible for everyone to do that so I’ve put together this resource pack of 200 reference photos. I have many, many students struggle with what to paint and whether their photos are appropriate. I decided to share some of my pictures with you hoping they’ll spark new ideas on what makes a good sub- ject. Some of them I’ve painted, some I haven’t. I hope that they will inspire you to get to the easel and perhaps take some photo expeditions of your own.
Bonus #4: "Paint Along with Marla from her studio" - I’m so thrilled to paint with you a couple of pieces from my variation series. This series was a body of work that I created a number of years ago. It started out as a dare from a friend of mine but grew into something that changed my attitude towards my working method.
This is recording of one of my live lessons. Recreate Explorations + Variations and surprise yourself with how much you can learn in just a couple of hours. Enjoy the evening and let’s create a beautiful pastel landscape together.
Bonus #5: "One Personal Video Critique from Marla" - Every day I get emails from artists around the world struggling to create something amazing with pastels.

And I hear the same complaints over and over again. Things like:

"I'm watching video lessons online and still not getting anywhere!"
"I keep working on the same piece over and over again - I can't ever finish."
"I'm still struggling to make the time to create art."

I answer questions like those with a Personal Video Critique. After completing a lesson you can send a picture of your completed work and I will give you back a Personal Video Critique. I'll show you what was right and where you can improve. Just upload a picture of your painting from one of the lessons that are in your account.

Once I finish your Personal Video Critique, I’ll post a reply and you’ll get an email to remind you that your critique is ready.
"I love Marla's lessons because I love painting along with her and recreating her beautiful masterpieces. She explains everything thoroughly and in a very understandable manner and I love her critiques. Thanks Marla!"
~Frederick, Pastel Painting Lessons Student

Example Critique:

  • Save your image file as a JPEG. Only JPEGS can be posted into the gallery.
  • Check the image size. If it's too large, it may have trouble posting. Keep your images smaller than 1000 px. on the longest side.
