The fact that you're watching this means that you are serious about becoming a good pastelist. After years of working as a professional artist and art instructor, I've tried to put into words and video the most important things I've learned about the wonderful world of pastel painting. I'm hoping to simplify the process for you by presenting the fundamental principles behind good painting, and detailing the technical information to help you create expressive and dynamic pastel paintings of any subject.

Some of what I'll be presenting to you in this workshop are basic principles, which are important even for the very experienced painter to revisit over and over, and there are some more advanced concepts which will take time and mileage behind the easel to incorporate into your work. Be kind and patient with yourself. We start with the basics of value, color, and mark-making. Then we move towards translating a scene into a strong pictorial arrangement, a composition. We'll discuss a little color theory, how best to use photo reference, and how to set up a still life.

I've organized all of these videos in a systematic way, so you can achieve the maximum benefit in your study of pastels. This is where the magic happens, a strong understanding of value, color, and composition that will provide you with the necessary tools to create art with a timeless aesthetic and appeal. This online workshop covers everything you need to know to get started: what pastels to buy, what surfaces to use, and how to set up your space. It includes a powerful warm-up exercise and step-by-step projects.

I hope you'll join me for this study of the exciting and dynamic medium of pastel.

Meet The Inspiring Pastelist Who Created PastelPaintingLessons.com

Marla is an incredibly talented fine artist who works with galleries throughout the US. Every year she travels the globe teaching workshops, speaking at art events to inspire other painters. Last year she launched a new website to the public with the purpose of helping thousands of struggling artists to succeed.

“My Working process is a simple one; I start on location, sketching, photographing and painting. Some of these field studies make their way to the studio.

In the studio I use all of that visual information and combine it with the sense or feeling I had for a location and create what is inevitably an abstraction of sorts in that it is not merely a copy of a photo but an interpretation of place. I hope that you enjoy the work!”

-Marla Baggetta

“Thank you very much for the great workshop [Trees in Pastel]!I am very happy with the progress I’ve made in the last months with both of your workshops.”

Clea
“I must tell you, after your Making Your Mark workshop...I feel I am improving and I won the grand prize / first place in the professional division of the festival.  I was blown away.”
Linda

Michigan
“I have had people telling me that they can see a huge improvement in my art in the past year and I have you to thank for that. When I signed up for the pastel lessons I told you that I needed someone to help me to the next level. Thanks for helping me.”

California
Doug
“After trying a few other online learning approaches to pastel painting, I was about to give up on pastels, thinking that I was not going to be able to learn how to use them. Marla’s 'PastelPaintingLessons' changed all that.

What's Included?

Chapter 1 - Introduction

I’m hoping to simplify the process for you by presenting the fundamental principles behind good painting.

Chapter 2 - Equipment + Supplies

Getting prepared to paint in pastels doesn’t have to be a daunting task. Take it one step at a time.

Chapter 3 - Warming Up

Before we start with our first piece that is a simple but powerful warm up, we are going to spend a bit of time getting to know these sticks.

Chapter 4 - How to Simplify

We need to simplify! See it simply
and paint it simply. Easier said than done.

Chapter 5 - Value Does the Work

The success of any painting depends on value more than any other aspect.

Chapter 6 - Color

As painters we need some kind of reliable way to talk about and work with color.

Chapter 7 - What to Paint?

To paint a thing, I have to see it with innocent eyes; eyes like a baby.

Chapter 8 - How to Use Photographs

I use photo reference all the time, so of course I believe that it’s possible to use photos effectively to make good paintings.

Chapter 9 - Self Critique

How do you know when you’re finished? Sometimes it’s very obvious and Sometimes it’s intuition.

How Does It Work?

Pastels for the Serious Beginner

Will It Work On My Computer/Laptop/Tablet/iPad/Phone?

Meet Marla

Pastels

I primarily use Terry Ludwig, Nu-Pastels, Mount Vision, Unison and Giraults but I also like many of the other brands such as Blue Earth and Schmincke. Please do not bring or buy Alphacolor or Prang pastels. No Oil Pastels. I recommend the Sennelier Paris half stick set of 120 for those who would like to purchase a good starter set. A great addition to that set or for anyone that doesn’t have any Terry Ludwig pastels, would be Terry Ludwig’s set of Intense Darks II.

Please prepare your pastels for working by taking off the wrappers, (before the workshop). Arrange them by color family and value. This will save you lots of time during the workshop. The largest set of pastels that you have (see recommendations in “Choosing Pastels” video).

The following Nupastels are needed:
#211, 229, 259, 279, 289, 299

Materials You Will Need

Paper

The brand of your choice such as Pastelmat, Pastel Premiere, or Uart. You can divide larger sheets to get equivalent amounts/sizes for the assignments. If you are a fast painter, and want to repeat assignments or try different version, consider purchasing a couple brands to try!

3 pieces approximately 9 x 12
2 pieces approximately 11 x 15

Other

A piece of foam core or board for backing support
Easel
Tape
A one hole punch
A ruler
2b pencils
Bristle brush
Isopropyl Alcohol (70%)
Sketchbook/notebook
Camera
An apple

Extras

More paper

Reference Material

For this workshop your choice of reference material is very important.
Most important; your photos should something you really want to paint! I recommend that you chose photos with 4 to 5 strong shapes and strong value differences. Gather more than you think you’ll need.
I’m looking forward to working with you!
